What you can expect from the course

A step by step introduction to the creation and maintenance of address data according to best practice and data entry guidelines. The course is delivered by one of our expert team who collectively have over 50 years' experience in creating and maintaining address and street data. We don't outsource our training which means you will be trained by experts who have been involved in writing the specifications for the data as well as bringing years of practical experience of data management.

The course will cover 5 core areas:

Session 1 - An introduction to the address gazetteer

This session covers the history of the gazetteers and the importance of the Custodian and Street Naming and Numbering roles within the local authority. A look at the contacts and governance that underpin the data provided to GeoPlace by local authorities and it’s wider usage. An overview of the support resources available for local authorities. This session lasts approx. 1 hour.

Session 2 - Data Entry Conventions

This session takes the core elements of the Data Entry Conventions (DEC) and looks at the best practice around capturing and maintaining BLPUs (Basic Land and Property Units), LPIs (Land and Property Identifiers), and Cross references. This session lasts approximately 2 hours.

Session 3 - DTF and data submission

This session looks into the structure of the data that is received at GeoPlace, how local authorities transfer this data and how the data can be kept in sync. Sources of change intelligence and the property lifecycle. Best practice around the creation and maintenance of streets, and an introduction to the National Street Gazetteer (NSG). This session lasts approx. 1.5 – 2 hours

Session 4 - Improvement schedules and data quality reports

This session looks at the Improvement Schedule which measures the quality of local authority data. Each measure is discussed in turn, with advice and guidelines provided on how to ensure your data meets the quality standards. This session is approx. 2 hours.

Session 5 - Linking to third party datasets

The last session explores our relationships with the Valuation Office, Royal Mail and other third party datasets used to enhance the quality of the National gazetteer. This session is approx. 1.5 hours.

Throughout the course there will be reference to best practice case studies and signposting to various other resources.

What you will get out of it

The course is designed to provide you with the information you need to manage the address gazetteer, and meet contractual obligations set out under the Data Cooperation Agreement (DCA).

You will come away with an understanding of how to represent real world objects in the appropriate data format. You will have a good awareness of the best practice associated with the creation and use of the data, and a sound understanding of how to submit your data to the hub.

You will get as much out of the sessions as you put in, so please get involved in any discussions during the sessions, and we suggest you think a little before you attend about what you want to discuss or find out more about.

Who should attend

All 5 sessions are recommended for Custodians or Deputy Custodians who have been in the role for less than a year. If you have been in the role for longer and would like a refresher on the Improvement Schedule elements, we are offering an Improvement Schedule refresher course covering sessions 4 and 5. Prices can be found below.
