10.25 - Transforming TTROs: from application to publication
- James Smith, Head of Product Management, Symology Ltd
This session offers an end-to-end overview of our TTRO and DTRO solution, illustrating how Authorities and Utilities can manage Temporary Traffic Regulation Orders via a streamlined, integrated approach, alongside Street Works data.
We follow the journey from submitting a TTRO application via ApplyForIt, with Utility access and integrated payments, through to managing orders in Aurora, where documentation, workflows and approvals are handled efficiently. This presentation also demonstrates how completed orders are published through the DTRO service in England and how this data can be consumed within Aurora environments and shared with the public. We will also touch on the solution’s bilingual capabilities, supporting regions such as Wales with dual language portals and documentation

- Mark Playforth, HSEQ Director, HDL and Training and Accreditation Working Group Co-Chair of Training, Accreditation Group
A brief overview of the current T&A Working Groups laying the foundations for the future of street works training and accreditation. With technology and AI taking over our world, how can we embrace it and use it to further enhance how training is delivered to initial learners and for those going through reassessment with the aim of greater flexibility, less downtime and increased engagement resulting in improved learning outcomes for all. More engagement equals greater knowledge absorbed, improved competency, better quality and increasing compliance.

FIRST FLOOR - Innovating Data
11.55 - Harnessing traffic data: the next step in remote traffic management
- Ben Parsons, Business Development Director, SRL Traffic Systems Ltd
Building on last year’s introduction to REMOS and the benefits of remote traffic control, this presentation explores the next evolution: the power of data.
Remote control systems are transforming from operational tools into rich sources of intelligence. By capturing vehicle counts, traffic flows and behavioural patterns, digital traffic management provides the insight needed to plan, manage and optimise the road network more effectively.
Ben will demonstrate how remote operations form a core building block in enabling safer and more resilient roads—supporting HAUC(UK)’s vision of futureready foundations for the next 40 years.

14.25 De-risking road works through designed-in safety
- Tom Miles, Commercial Director, Traffic Group Signals
Roadworks are inherently high-risk environments, with exposure to live traffic, changing road layouts, and unpredictable driver behaviour. While manual control and basic temporary signals are often used to manage complexity, both approaches introduce their own safety and consistency challenges. This session explores how risk can be reduced by removing people from harm, improving traffic predictability, and designing safer control strategies from the outset. By applying permanent signalling principles in an agile, temporary context — sites of all sizes can achieve safer operations, smoother traffic flow, and reduced risk for workers, road users, and project delivery

15.30 - Coexistence by design: rethinking utilities and urban light rail
- Chris Micallef, Track Programmes Lead, Coventry City Council
Utility diversions for urban light rail have historically cost anywhere between £5 million and £20 million per kilometre — making many projects financially unviable before a single rail is laid, despite the transport, environmental and placemaking benefits they offer. Coventry Very Light Rail (CVLR) was born from a challenge to change this.
Using CVLR as a live case study, this session shows how a radically shallower trackform, combined with trenchless technologies and a risk-based utility-access strategy, can shift the relationship between light rail and buried utilities from conflict to managed coexistence. State-of-the-art subsurface surveying, captured within a digital twin environment, creates government-owned asset intelligence enabling risk-informed decisions about which utilities to relocate, protect or leave in place. The session covers practical methods developed and trialled for planned access, new service introduction, maintenance, and emergency intervention — making a grounded, engineering-led case for designing transport and utility systems together more intelligently, reducing disruption, risk, programme duration and cost.
