National address gazetteer; what it means for local government

Posted: 22 February 2011

On 3 December 2010, Eric Pickles MP, the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, announced the formation of a single national address gazetteer which will provide one definitive source of accurate publicly-owned spatial address data for the whole of the public sector.

To deliver this, the Local Government Group and Ordnance Survey have entered into a joint venture partnership, 'GeoPlace'. Local government is represented on the board of the joint venture by John Ransford, Chief Executive and Stephen Jones, Group Finance Director of the Local Government Group.

GeoPlace will bring together local government's address and streets gazetteers; the National Land and Property Gazetteer (NLPG) and the National Street Gazetteer (NSG), with all of Ordnance Survey's addressing products.

It is clear that there are many benefits for local government and the wider public sector from definitive addressing.
